...and XP too! By following this tutorial, you can see a quick and easy way to run NFS: HS on modern operating systems (NOTE: I HAVE NOT tested this on XP myself, but I see no reason why it shouldn't work. I HAVE tested it on Vista extensively.) One of the best things about this tutorial is that MOST LIKELY YOU WON'T HAVE TO DOWNLOAD ANYTHING aside from this tutorial to get the game up and running. In some circumstances, the 4.50 patch is necessary, but not always.

Just one caution: NFS: HS on Vista appears to be VERY sensitive to high-poly cars, even with the high-poly patches. For some reason, if more than one is on a race at once, the game shuts down. But aside from that, the game runs flawlessly (there's even a widescreen mode for those of you who could use it!)

does it help if you have a better graphics card or CPU?

I haven't tried it on 64-bit Vista, only 32-bit. I personally doubt it would run in x64, just because of the age of the game, but hey, you might as well try it. Shouldn't hurt anything...

As far as the graphics card and CPU things go, NFS4 will run on dual core processors (it only uses one of the cores, but that is usually plenty). I personally use a 128MB NVidia GeForce 8300, and with the graphics on full (and set to D3D) I experience absolutely no lag. So that's my experience.

Tnx for the comments!

I need help on running NFS4 on vista x64....for some reason when i click to proceed to installation a popup appears asking if i want to allow the content to control my computer. I click Allow, and the box closes...and nothing happens. This happens on every windows 98 game i have tried....help? Any ideas?

Something that has worked for me in the past to get games to run (when they wouldn't install from the CD) is manually copying ALL of the contents from the disk to the place where they would go if the install had worked. Then I extract all the .cab files (if necessary) to their respective places, and try running it from there (by following my tutorial, of course!) . I've had a mix of success and failure, but it's always worth a shot.

However, since we are talking about running NFS4 in an architecture it wasn't meant to run in, I don't know if it would work at all.

NFS4 doesn't need this to function under Vista. I was running NFS IV on Vista about 6 months before this came out. If I remember correctly, all I did was put in the v4.5 patch and use the dual-core fix.

Peugeot: I didn't mean to say that NFS 4 absolutely wouldn't run on Vista without following this tutorial. For me, the dual-core and 4.5 patches didn't cut it, so I used an alternative method. Not everyone will need it, but for those who do, it is here.

VaruTzZu: this same thing happened to me on Windows XP Service Pack 2. After a while, my hard drive crashed and I had to do a complete reformat and reinstall of Windows. When I tried again, it worked. BUT THIS WAS JUST TO GET IT TO INSTALL. If you were already able to install NFS 4, your OS is probably fine, just launch the game using the 'PatchNFS.exe' instead of the main .exe (which is the main thing about this tutorial...you still might benefit from reading it, if you haven't already).

to nfsnfs: The download button is directly above the description. Just save it somewhere on your computer, open up the .zip file with your favorite compression program, and open up the contained file with MS Word.

to RockWheels: YES! This does work on Vista Home Premium! Actually, this should work on any 32-bit version of Vista, though I can't prove that myself. The main thing to do is just try it out and see what happens, since the tutorial doesn't involve doing anything dangerous to your PC. It may work, it may not, Vista is just kind of touchy when it comes to old games, after all. You could always try running it in Microsoft Virtual PC if all else fails.

Thanks LukeSkillz...
I had problems with graphics, it was to slow.
My OS is XP SP2.
I have a HD 3870, and following your tutorial with some changes I managed to play this marvelous game again.
For those who might be interested, I basically did as follows:
1. fresh install
2. copied and install a 4.5 patch
and it worked...
it didn't want to work with patchNFS.exe, but one must try all possibilities, those two worked just fine for me...

Cheers...

MontyMole: NFS4 tends to select the software driver by default, simply because it is the most compatible, but if you switch that to direct3d (use the configuration shortcut in the start menu...can't remember what the exact name is) that should make the graphics run great...and look much nicer too.

For those wondering, YES, NFS4 DOES seem to work with DirectX 10!

Yoou people just don't realize... All you have to do is install it and run it from the D: drive instead of E:

Did you have to do any special setup with your NVidia GeForce 8300? I can only get the software renderer to work with my GeForce 8600 GTS. WIth the Direct3D Device option, NFSHS won't load.

@FB-Mayne: That frankly has nothing to do with it. Drive letters vary from computer to computer. I for one have a RECOVERY disk as Drive D, so it is impossible to run any game disc from there. And if you meant run it from a CD drive instead of a DVD drive, that shouldn't make any difference in if it runs on Vista or not.

@nfsHarold: I downloaded the updated 3D setup program from this site, but there wasn't any special set up with the card itself, and I wasn't even entirely sure the 3d program was working for me anyway...still, it may be worth looking into.

@tubaman: Yeah, probably. The game doesn't typically look to the working directory for the music files. Usually it looks to the CD. The ".//" indicates that it is looking in the folder that you have NFS4 installed. So I'm guessing it is the crack. Unless you also crack the NFSPatch.exe, or use a CD, you'll get this error. However, I DON'T reccommend cracking anything...NFS4 would probably cost about 25 cents on amazon.com after all these years...just try getting a real copy and your problem should be solved.

OK For Vista x64 version users you need to install the full game then you just need to go on to this page http://www.team-ger.org/nuke6.5/index.php?cid=2&d_op=viewdownload&name=Downloads Then download the file called: NFS HS EP Setup(V2.1A_Build_1.31) about 79.64mb. ANd during the instalation select direct 3d smth like that, and dont mark DIRECT BUFFER cause game will be very slow, select the last direct x7 on the page etc. this helps to me. But i have another problem now i cant play online :( when i starting game it says something
